What Should a Small Business Actually Spend on SEO?

A framework for setting an SEO budget based on lead value, competition and how fast you need results.

March 17, 2026 · 6 min read

The most useful budgeting question is not what SEO costs. It is what one additional customer per month is worth to you, and how many you need for the investment to be obviously correct.

Start from lifetime customer value

A roofer whose average job is $14,000 and a cleaner whose average client is worth $2,400 a year should not be running the same budget. Work backwards from value, not from a price list.

Account for competition and timeline

Dense, competitive markets take longer and cost more. So does needing results in four months instead of twelve. Both are legitimate reasons to spend more.

Fund the foundation first

Profile optimization, citation cleanup and review systems are relatively inexpensive and produce the fastest movement. Content and authority building come after the base is solid.
