Schema Markup for Local Businesses: A Practical Guide

Which structured data types local businesses should implement, and how they influence search and AI results.

March 31, 2026 · 7 min read

Structured data tells search engines exactly what your pages contain instead of making them infer it. For local businesses it is quick to implement and increasingly important as AI systems parse the web.

Start with LocalBusiness and Organization

These carry your name, address, phone, hours, service area and social profiles in a machine-readable form. They should exist sitewide and match your profile data exactly.

Add Service, FAQ and Breadcrumb markup

Service schema clarifies what each page offers, FAQ markup can produce expanded results and feeds AI answers, and breadcrumbs improve how your pages are displayed and understood.

Never mark up what is not on the page

Structured data must reflect visible content. Marking up reviews or FAQs that do not appear on the page is a guideline violation.
